Oxford - May Morning and Morris Dancing

Oxford - May Morning and Morris Dancing

What a gorgeous May 1st, celebrating Spring in Oxford! Thousands of people gather every year for the city’s traditional May morning celebration.

Crowds congregate at 6am, outside Oxford University Magdalen College to hear choristers sing from the top of the Great Tower before bells ring out across the city.

The May morning celebration also includes Morris dancing and folk singing in the ancient squares and Oxford city streets.

Many students choose to stay up all night before the celebration and many pubs, cafes, and restaurants open early to provide breakfast and refreshments.

Well done to the Lake School students who arrived on time and awake for class this morning!

May is a wonderful month in Oxford, and Lake School students really get a chance to enjoy the city in the social and cultural activity programme, including Artweeks – with local artists exhibiting all over the city and Eights week – when Oxford University college rowing teams compete in races on the River Thames.
